In rural Maine, a number of small towns have established local food ordinances. These municipal laws exempt local farmers from licensing and inspection regulations, provided they sell their products directly to consumers.

State officials aren't completely comfortable with the new laws though, and have contested them in at least one town.

Supporters believe that the ordinances strengthen local communities and allow townspeople to take control of their agricultural economies. Opponents criticize the potentially dangerous lack of oversight and voice concern about placing risk assessment solely on the consumer. If someone gets sick from unlicensed, unregulated food, there is a very real possibility that many local farmers will be negatively affected.

Despite their differences, farmers and advocates on both sides of the debate share a common goal - to support local food systems. Local, sustainable food is more likely to be fresh and safe, and it can be significantly better for both your community and the environment.
